Karen Thornley Dip PFS Later Life Specialist

Karen has been an Independent Financial Adviser since the early 90s, and advises on Investments, generating tax efficient income in retirement, Inheritance Tax Planning and Retirement Planning. She specialises in Later Life Advice including Lifetime Care Fees funding.

Taking the holistic approach to help clients achieve their objectives, her invaluable experience and knowledge in later life advice has helped thousands of people lost in the maze of care fees planning.

She is proud to have been accredited with The Society for Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) for over 12 years, giving the assurance she can deliver the practical help and guidance needed when an elderly relative has a long-term care need. Karen has been shortlisted for the Health Insurance "Best Long-Term Care Intermediary" Award every year from 2007 to 2016 and on two occasions won this prestigious award.

Her passion for making current information readily available for families of elderly people, inspired her to write an annual Guide to Care Fees Planning from 2007 to 2012 which packed a lot of easy-to-understand information into one handy guide. This was welcomed by care providers, solicitors, charities, and anyone who wanted to know the up-to-date situation regarding care fees funding, over those years.

Karen has run workshops for the Personal Finance Society for independent financial advisers at their Annual Conference and presented long term care planning across the Country at their Regional Conferences. She has also run and presented at seminars for Solicitors over the years, with guest speakers including Baroness Greengross and Senior Judge Denzil Lush.

For over ten years, Karen jointly founded and ran a professional practice specialising in advising vulnerable clients and their attorneys on care fees funding, building an excellent reputation over this time. She now runs the Later Life division of The Minster Partnership in Wimborne, Dorset.

Many of Karen’s clients are acting for an elderly person who has lost capacity, as their Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, or Court Appointed Deputy and she works closely with professional attorneys/deputies to help them with financial planning for their clients.

Karen has in recent years dealt with care issues for her late father and late step-mother and has an aging mother living in another country which has its challenges. These experiences have helped her understanding of how her clients are feeling and are being treated by Local Authorities and the NHS during emotional and stressful times.

Karen strongly believes older people should be treated with patience, respect and kindness. She gives them time to understand and trust the advice she gives them, and includes their families, if they wish.  She fully understands arranging care for a loved one can be emotive and stressful and is often the first time someone is dealing with such difficult decisions. Her advice and wisdom guides people through these difficult times and gives them peace of mind they are making the best financial decisions they can for their loved ones.

Karen is supported by Angeline Coles.
